In Les Superstars, a group that has been around for two years, the keyboards, as in zouk, are the predominant instrumental sound, instead of the graceful intertwined lines of a guitar. And instead of having a cool exterior hiding an intense drive, the drive is right there in the form of the group's lead singer, Michel Batista. Mr. Batista is an overdriven performer; shaking his head furiously and violently tossing off phrases, he came off like a Haitian James Brown, but with a sense of humor. Instead of the old-style compas, in which the guitars arpeggiate arabesques, Les Superstars' guitarists chorded; where Skah Shah added intricacy upon intricacy, Les Superstars simplified. But like Skah Shah, Les Superstars made the audience dance.
